9:00 pm
hello i'm tom hartman in washington d.c. and here's what's coming up tonight on the big picture president has finally said enough to fast and furious the latest and most bizarre republican conspiracy theory always fox so-called news help give life to this crazy conspiracy what's the true story behind all the fear mongering also republicans want to give the working class in america a tax hike and surely that violates grover norquist x.-plane right that more in tonight's alone liberal rumble and yesterday republicans had a chance to protect american jobs and protect the working plus they chose not to
9:01 pm
why how come republicans hate the american worker. you need to know. the republican dissent into the fast and furious twilight zone continues today republican darrell ices house oversight committee voted to hold attorney general eric holder in contempt of congress for not turning over d.o.j. documents related to the fast and furious program that vote comes on the heels of the white house asserting executive privilege over those same documents that ice is demanding a move that president george w. bush employed six times and president clinton used fourteen times fast and furious was a program started by the bush administration recently named wide receiver centered on selling guns in mexico and then tracking those guns up to the high level drug cartels ultimately the program was abandoned after an american border patrol agent was killed in
9:02 pm
a shootout with suspected undocumented immigrants who were using fast and furious gun laws and that's what republicans began their witch hunt in to attorney general eric whole. holder alongside some truly bizarre conspiracy theories despite testifying eight times in front of congress and handing over thousands of documents attorney general holder was unable to satisfy congressman ices which because he was unwilling to turn over documents that would have compromised ongoing live criminal investigations in response to the contempt vote attorney general holder issued a statement saying this divisive action does not help us fix the problems that led to this operation or previous ones and it does nothing to make any of our law enforcement agents safer it is an election year tactic intended to distract attention and as a result has deflected critical resources from fulfilling what remains my top priority at the department of justice protecting the american people there's
9:03 pm
a bigger picture to all of this and it has to do with the right wingers and their constant paranoia over gun rights and race the president has finally put his foot down to stop the spread of a particularly bizarre republican conspiracy theory although in the process he may actually be fueling if you don't watch fox news a listener right wing talk radio you probably don't know anything about this but let me lay it out for you this is the conspiracy theory that and in fact on my radio show today and a number of people calling in saying yeah fact i had a gun store owner down in alabama call and say here it is here's the theory two black guys turn in general eric holder and president obama want revenge for centuries of slavery and all the black people who died as a result of it so they conspired to sell a bunch of guns to a bunch of brown guys down in mexico in a law enforcement plan that was designed it was set up to fail. it was set up to fail because it was set up so that those brown guys in the guns would make their
9:04 pm
way back to the united states and create such a massive gutting gang base crime wave crisis that white americans would cry out say please stop or take the guns keep in mind this thing was set up in order to give the black eyes holder and obama a rationalization to suspend the second amendment and start confiscating white people's guns and then round up all the white people into fema concentration camps because like the jews in germany the white people had lost their second amendment right to shoot back you think that's crazy listen to congressman tim walberg a republican member of congress laying out this bizarre conspiracy theory right here as he was interviewing eric holder. that this thing was good as gone wrong which was set up to go wrong and frankly i believe was set up to go wrong in order to deal with second amendment liberties of of law abiding citizens and pushing into
9:05 pm
a perception that it was the problem of the second amendment as opposed to law enforcement and more importantly mr attorney general your oversight of an agency of a department of individual leaders in that apartment that have not been held accountable . well with all due respect and i mean this with great respect the notion that this was an operation set up to do something to impinge upon the second amendment rights of my fellow citizens is absurd this conspiracy theory exists in what is essentially a bizarro parallel universe here in the united states where fox hosts of the right wing talk show host can simply say fast and furious and they're watchers instantly know that what they're talking about is this black guy president obama's secret plan to disarm white americans the same way hitler did before he started sending jews off to auschwitz only this time obama wants to send off people to the secret fema camps and the people he wants to send off are poor and working class white
9:06 pm
people you think i'm exaggerating now that you know the key to the code you just heard the congressman referring to this was an attempt to set up to to suspend second amendment liberties for law abiding people code for white people check out the latest ad from a guy named sam were who once lied to president obama said that his name was joe and then lied to say he was about to buy a plumbing business here's his new it. in one thousand and eleven turkey established gun control. from one nine hundred fifteen thousand nine hundred seventeen one point five million i mean he's unable to defend themselves works. in one nine hundred thirty nine germany established company. from one thousand thirty nine and one thousand forty five six million jews and seven million others unable to defend themselves works from. america
9:07 pm
first off the armenian genocide was largely committed under cover of war in fact most genocides are virtually all genesis. and the idea that people with guns are going to stop an army i mean an army with tanks machine guns grenades planes all the weapons of war it's absurd even here in the united states it's absurd says david koresh who had literally hundreds of weapons at his branch davidian compound sam wurzelbacher once a voided genocide anywhere he should join thomas jefferson and me in calling for an end to standing armies during times of peace the german and german army to actually conquered the armies of country after country across europe the genocide was only possible because the german army had already defeated the armies of the other countries at least the genocide outside of germany even though the polish and french citizens were armed if their own army couldn't hold off the german army how would you expect the citizens to sam or joe or whatever his name is living in
9:08 pm
a fantasy world finally there have been no efforts by the obama administration take away anybody's guns they haven't even touched the topic they haven't even put it back into place common sense restrictions like the high capacity clips like the one that crazy gunners only use to try to kill congresswoman gabby giffords instead in fact obama's gun owners carry their weapons in a national parks this is all hysterical fear mongering suggesting our nation's first black president is planning to take away guns from white people and it plays to the basis and most crass racist strain in american politics it's time to call it out and call for feeding it. it's wednesday are you ready to rumble joining me for tonight's lone liberal rival michael warner the reporter with the weekly standard in laughlin mark a the investigative reporter a an investigative reporter here in the investigative even the heritage foundation
9:09 pm
thank you both for joining me tonight so republicans voted to hold aig general holder in contempt despite the president asserting executive authority back in march twentieth of two thousand and twelve their allies had come right out and said we very clearly respect want to respect the history of executive privilege apparently when politics though are involved he doesn't allies are coming as came out today saying quote to ice you accuse the attorney general of a cover up for protecting documents that he was prohibited from law by by law from producing i mean i said and the president are both asserting and this could be impeachable if they're lie they're asserting that the documents that they're they're withholding are ones that involve ongoing criminal investigations and this would compromise them and congress is always deferred it's always different so isn't this just a witch hunt and shouldn't republicans be focused on creating jobs rather than trying to embarrass the president michel look i mean if you want to go back and see what people said in the past you can talk about what obama said about executive privilege and extending it back when he was running for president two thousand
9:10 pm
seventy thousand eighty railed against president and solace case but yes i was actually resigned over that i mean obviously they're trying to do the same thing with wright with holder but it doesn't look like holder actually was committing the crimes that gonzales well look i think i think in terms of image for this campaign this is sort of this is this does make the president president obama's administration look a little look a little bad i mean the question is whether are they actually hiding something by not releasing this in this document or are they just sort of playing around and playing politics with this. in hopes that maybe everybody will think that the republicans are a bunch of right wing crazies like well and today and this congressman laughlin you know comes right out and says this thing was set up from the beginning to fail so that the white the second amendment rights of law abiding citizens could be compromised and you know as i mentioned before on the air i do a three hour radio show every day and i've had people call in from all including
9:11 pm
a gun store owner down in alabama and saying. want to put all the white people in a family camp so no no this is the first step you got to take away our guns and these people believe that stuff goes right wing machine is just feeding it i don't certainly don't believe it i haven't seen any evidence that this was a manufactured crisis like that but i did want to if you want to understand i did want to correct you on one point you made in the introduction to the segment which was that this was an extension of a bush administration program you're referring to operation wide receiver and in fact there were very crucial differences and i'll just name two of them one of them is that the bush administration worked hand in hand and cooperated with the mexican government under the holder just as a part of the meadow where they all were going to go it was not important that we were sending guns to their territory in the second difference is that the guns under the bush administration were actually they were just tracked but they were agents on the scene tracking the guns physically in the presence of those guns whereas the obama justice department simply wrote down the serial numbers and
9:12 pm
allowed them to freely go into mexico facilitating the crisis the so-called botched operation which wasn't actually botched that we've seen well let's stipulate that failed but if you're saying it wasn't actually budget are you agreeing with the congress no no no no no no no no i mean. that usually when people are using the term botched they seem to be implying that it was not the intention to allow guns to be to be given to mexican drug cartels when in fact that was the intention well and these kind of stings michel are not unusual i mean we they're doing these in terrorism we're getting all the time but it's a pretty terrible you look at the what and. really happened it's a it's a pretty terrible thing what what the government decided to do giving johns to criminals in mexico i mean i mean this is this is really the bigger scale they were trying to cover up they were you always track them from the little fish to the big fish and the bush administration thought it was a good idea but when they told the mexican government doesn't make it a good axeman government told the told the drug lords about it i mean that's that's all blew up that's why the obama administration really seems self evidently
9:13 pm
a bad idea given the consequences that have flowed from it ok yeah and maybe it's a cautionary tale about sting operations period more rubble right after the break. wealthy british scientists think it's time to.
9:14 pm
market why not. find out what's really happening to the global economy with mike stronger no holds barred look at the global financial headlines tune into a report. the n b a. the a.
9:15 pm
but. it. was. that nights alone global rumble joining me tonight michael warne border with the weekly standard and laughlin mark a investigative reporter with the heritage foundation new study out by the congressional joint economic committee joint as in both bodies i'm assuming and bipartisan whatever found that the paul ryan budget raises taxes on working americans if you make more than a million dollars a year like mitt romney does you see a three hundred thirty one thousand dollar annual tax cut but if you make under one hundred thousand dollars a year you make you see a four thousand four hundred dollars tax increase this is the scoring of the paul
9:16 pm
ryan budget which has been endorsed by grover norquist so rich people get the tax break working people get a tax hike does this mean that there's an unwritten exemption to the to grover nor to the multi-millionaire lobbyist grover lower costs pledge that tax cuts don't tax hikes don't matter if they're just working people like this study by the g.e.c. is actually done by the senate democrats who run the g.e.c. of the senate side of the g.e.c. and it's not so it's not nonpartisan i mean they've maybe got some nonpartisan economists to check it off and say yes it's nonpartisan but it's done on behalf of the senate democrats and the fact the matter is that no one from c.b.s. the actual sort of down the line neutral arbiter of this stuff nobody scored this the other side of it is that ways and means there's not budget are the folks who actually decide you know how these taxes are act or are actually done and actually here's the number of them so breaks out it's pretty simple i mean you know the math is right there in the in the budget it's gone full screen so you can see it on the
9:17 pm
monitor here the people in the three bottom whatever they are as you know sections of the people and bottom of the economic pyramid the pain more in taxes you know it's a negative tax cut and and the people making more than a million twelve point five percent tax cut five hundred two i mean. the study is fatally flawed and all tell you why it assumes baseline revenue projections going into the future which is about twenty one percent of g.d.p. in revenue whereas the paul ryan plan assumes eighteen to nineteen percent of g.d.p. in revenue so in other words you're talking up to an additional four hundred twenty billion dollars of revenue that these projections say were to be require sound of revenue right now but the point is it was based on projections that it assumes a revenue level that's two to three percentage points percentage of g.d.p. higher than the paul ryan plan in the run in atlanta is not required to just does not require we raise as much revenue as this study says it has to say we're right
9:18 pm
now we're raising between one thousand and one thousand percent of g.d.p. in taxes and we're spending around twenty one percent of g.d.p. thus the deficit paul ryan says that his budget is going to close that budget gap so i don't know where he's down spending not by increasing taxes though it is suits eighteen nineteen percent of g.d.p. revenue intake and i also might add that by assuming the current baseline which assumes that the top income tax brackets will go up to forty percent and the capital gains tax will go up to twenty three percent that's not currently the way it is so these where you have the required amount that comes back it's are reduced and the amount that the capital gains taxes are reduced under the ryan plan has been vastly overestimated by the study i think we just you know walk a far this to the point everybody's are god's laws. but the bottom line if if working people are paying more taxes i mean grover norquist was not opposed to the biggest tax cut for working people in the history of the united states obama's tax cut but the repeal point is this study is is fatally flawed it's not
9:19 pm
odd but what michael about what he said it's fine if you if you do away with obama's to about what was that word but what's the i mean the fact the matter is is that the duction ins if you're wealthy your taking advantage of deductions because you have enough income to take advantage of their. dr there was so as for us there was no look you know there are there are loopholes in the tax code right now that paul ryan and the budget committee in this in this budget said we would like to see reform of that tax code get rid of these of of these loopholes and that's going to that's going to affect. the wealthier people anyway so i mean i see the numbers are the numbers mean and getting rid of loopholes let's get rid of some of the loopholes that some of these banks have been using to crash our economy this is insane j.p. morgan chase c.e.o. jamie dimon it went up to the hill for a second day of of our elected officials say may i kiss your butt sir please in
9:20 pm
this case it was the house financial services committee the day before he was the son of republican chairman spencer baucus who calls j.p. morgan his second largest donor in his political career refused to even ask mr diamond to testify under oath so that he could be held for perjury should the day come. and then after this after this incredible. you know almost french kissing session the republicans voted to slash funding for wall street regulators of the commodity futures. trading commission the it is the f.t.c. . why do republicans want the banks to use to crash our economy it's so it sounds so if you're going to say slash the budget slat a budget of these they cut one hundred twenty million dollars out of president obama's request i mean they're basically going to prevent them from hiring the regulators to enforce dodd frank so so what would be better would it be better to have more regulators and more bureau bureaucrats taking you know taking care of
9:21 pm
this did anybody ever get a banker is yeah or would it be better to have better laws written by people not named barney frank or chris dodd to actually reform and all of this is a regulation was it were by partisan well well i might add that j.p. morgan not federal regulators. caught the two billion dollar slip up that had all the unrelated all this fuss but the point is that just that be a bigger concern to us the fact that in certain we didn't have as a whole cern that our biggest bank in the united states was losing two three maybe four billion dollars in another country absolutely of concern so you do think that the republicans are wrong when they cut funding and see if you see that would have oversight over exactly this because they lost this money on derivatives i have not seen any dollars there that is for that extra bit of budget would have prevented this fiasco from happening i don't think that can really be shown the answer always seems to be one more regulation one more regulator and the problems keep actually is that the evidence is in peril we from from the founding of the republic until
9:22 pm
nine hundred thirty five we never went more than fifteen years without a major banking and major national banking crisis never from one nine hundred thirty five until two thousand two thousand and seven we during that period time. we had no banking crisis ok every fifteen years none for for a gent for three generations and then all of a sudden you know phil gramm comes along and says a commodity futures modernization act graham which bliley let's go as thing was put in place one hundred thirty five the regulations go away thanks to crawl out of the out of the cockroach holes and crash the entire world's economy and you don't want to reregulate them i don't get it i mean you know a big selling point for the volcker rule has been this sort of you know the j.p. morgan disaster and i think it's a good microcosm for the larger debate because the volcker rule would not have prevented this fiasco we have but we need to go beyond that glass steagall also
9:23 pm
would not have prevented the financial crisis bear stearns and lehman brothers would not have been regulated under glass steagall so i see a lot of you know straw man arguments being thrown around in favor of greater regulation that would not have actually would not have ices and yes you know what you just said is true that there commodities operations would have been a regular. that was phil gramm commodities futures modernization act which he did because his wife was on the board of enron and you know this is what ken lay want he want to be able to gamble in energy futures but the fact that they could merge a gambling bank and investment bank with a commercial bank that would have been prevented and what that means is that when this thing crashed when these guys brought down the world had they been separated we could have just said ok guys go bankrupt doesn't matter to us because you've got nobody's passbook savings but this is this is the problem with having people like spencer baucus as the chairman of this committee i mean he's you're exactly right when he said that this is second biggest donor i mean this is there are republicans in the house there are republicans out there there are conservatives out there that
9:24 pm
are actually concerned about the size of banks they say banks are too big spencer baucus is not one of them so this is a problem that republicans need to deal with because the realities are exactly what you said that famously ronald reagan in eighty two stepped in for some of the sherman antitrust act which had been on the books since one thousand nine hundred one and thus we had this mergers and acquisition frenzy and now we've got all these big banks are youth are you saying we should roll back reagan's policies because nobody knows what i'm saying is look great economy is change over time and policies need to change with them and so i can't apply what reagan did in one thousand and two to what's happening thirty years later in two thousand and twelve but the point is is that conservatives or republicans need to actually think about real banking regular regulation reform and think about whether or not we actually want big banks that i don't think conservatives who care about you know stable money and strong you know lending industry want to have these big banks that that they can that can merge annually they said a moment
9:25 pm
a startling moment of concern it was yesterday at the take back the american dream conference here in washington nobel prize winning economist paul krugman said that in order to rebuild our economy we need something to happen similar to preparing for war two which got us out of the great depression here's my suggestion which he has said many times before by the way that the government should be preparing for a possible alien invasion of earth. if we discovered that space aliens were planning to attack and we needed a massive buildup to counter the space alien threat and really it's lation then budget deficits took secondary place to that. this slump would be over in eighteen months and then if we discovered so are question other republicans waiting for a space alien invasion to come to earth or. war or whatever you know why is it the nothing comes out of the out of the out of the house that. i don't know i mean. yes exactly who are we doing there waiting for you know some other dimension aliens got
9:26 pm
we're just been waiting for it and that's what we talk about our secret right wing nut case yeah you know krugman got his nobel for trade policy i believe is probably just stick to trade policy and you know i can't imagine destroying wealth is a good way to promote the economy ok and i would say we are already being invaded the robotic pigeons of the planet xena were here ever seen a dead never seen a dead fish right never never seen a baby pigeon never know it's happening the spaceship brings them down drops them off they were you know whenever you have powerful people famous people rich people whatever pigeons are there as you can see with best seller supply and yeah exactly michael on a lot of america thank you very much to eat something so. crazy alert austrian wildlife caught on tape and i'm not talking about the deer last week wildlife cameras in the austrian forested region of car in thea picked up the
